Unlike most of my contemporaries I have actually read the book. I have seen just about all of the movie adaptions, even the humorous ones. There hasn't been a true representation of this plot line yet, sorry to say
The sympathy for the monster comes from the common thought that we all to certain extent feel alone or "outcast" if even for a short time. The presumption of the scientist was a common enough occurance during the 19th century.
