| Posted Jul 9, 2009 by Gnomon [See A60420098 for details of new sign-in system] I spend a lot of time in Wexford and any time I visit it, it is hard to walk down the main street, it is so busy. But from your descriptions, you never actually got to the main street! You seem to have spent your time down on the quays.
If you had contacted me in advance, I could have given you a list of good restaurants in the town.

We did make it to the main street. A good third of it seemed to be boarded up or ultra-cheap chain shops. And by five, it was deserted. Before that, it seemed to be mostly schoolchildren and their mums come to pick them up.
Wexford is obviously a tourist town, and, I presume, was hit hard and suddenly by the recession. You can tell from the corporate architecture, upscale knockoff copies of something originally done about ten years ago, meaning it was built five years ago at the most. But the posh office buildings were empty, the streets deserted (except for dog walkers) and any restaurant not in a hotel catering to the super-rich set was shut by the time we went to look for dinner, which was at about seven! They all seemed to do only lunch and early-bird specials.

Well I'm off to Wexford for a week's holidays on Sunday. I hope it's not as bleak as you say.

I suppose it's more like alright if you have a kitchen you can use, and transport besides your feet

Posted Jul 9, 2009 by Gnomon [See A60420098 for details of new sign-in system] Some of my favourite restaurants are in Wexford:
La Dolce Vita (which doesn't open in the evening) does the best Italian food in Ireland - the Irish Times food critic said he'd eat the food out of the dustbins of this restaurant, it is so good.
Heavens Above is pricy but great; it's above The Sky and The Ground pub.
Spice is a very good Indian restaurant.
And the Premier chipper is one of the best chipshops around.
For during the day, Stable Diet is a great coffee shop with lovely cakes. And Cappuccinos do a good range of paninis etc.
Forde' is expansive but good for an evening meal.

Right. Just proves the point that it's futile looking for a place open in the evening that has vegetarian food for a student budget

Posted Jul 9, 2009 by Dmitri Gheorgheni Hey, Gnomon: If you're going to Wexford for a week, would you please take pictures and write us a report here in afterwards?
That way we could have, er, fair and balanced reporting. And just possibly rehabilitate this place's reputation from the damage done by these two hapless tourists...

Posted Jul 9, 2009 by King Bomba I suspect we hit town at a bad time, Gnomon. I hope it's better around this time of year for your visit. The main street was busy enough, but only until around 5pm or so.
I can see why it may seem that we're exaggerating a little bit, but it really was like a ghost town when we passed through. If it reads like one long complaint, it isn't really. It was certainly memorable.
