Tony the lair, and other tales of a test-victim
Post: 1

Cast you minds back to the heady days of 1997, when for the first time in my existance, a socialist (cough, splutter) goverment had been elected. Surly our Tony would stick to his promise and continue free eduction for all.

No, however he did promise that nobody would have to pay anything untill they had graduated. Okay I thought, that seems resonable ( even if it was the tory policy).

So I negatiated the tons of forms sent to me by the chaotic Essex Eduction Authoirty, and arrived at UMIST ready to sign up. It was only then that I was told that I'd have to pay.

I can't belive it, Tony Blair lied to me - (how naive I was then!)

Not only that, I was sitting next to a guy who had taken a year out previously, so I was paying £1000 more a year for the same treatment, cause I was born 5 months later.

Socialism ?

So when tony says nobody will have to pay, just like he promised no top-up fees I don't belive him.

Why do we want 50% of people to go to University ? That means everybody of average intelligence goes to uni. There is no point saying that graduates will earn £40,000 more than everybody else, the economy won't be able to support a population half made up of uni grads, especially if half of them are unemployed media studies grads.

Also top up fees vary for diffeent courses. Say that you had the choise of doing physics or maths, maths is purly class bassed so will have low or no top up fees, where as for a three year course, Physics will have you in debt another £6000, for probably the same job prospects after. And in a country that is suffering a brain drain, where htere are not enought scince teachers around, its the public who will suffer. Especially if the plumber now charges three times as much becuase he's got a degree.
