I'm afraid not. Some of the talkers, Surfers for example, provide java connections to the talker on their website (http://surfers.org/) but it's impossible to write a generic one due to java's Applet class having a security restriction that prevents it from making connections outside of the server it was downloaded from.

..and more to the point, even if you use a java applet to connect,
that applet still needs to make a telnet-style connection to
the talker to work, so if you have a firewall and no socks
proxy, you're stuck I'm afraid.

Snowplains provides a web interface, which you can access from www.snowplains.org

You need to be a resident first though, as you cant connect via the web interface without residency.

I do exist on Surfers as OwlofDoom, and also on Gateway (gw.spodzone.org.uk 5252) and ThePub (doughnuts.co.uk 4000) as Owl.

I see you're not on Surfers now, mind. smiley

talker connection over HTTP, no port used other than 80, works a treat most of the time - except when it crashes smiley
