I would advise only the most hardened westerners to venture inside! In my experience they are generally badly lit and attract drunks (as you would expect) and criminals, at every time of day. It's safer to visit a local brewery. Of course you can always find a safe tourist lodge to drink in, or for a more authentic Malawian experience, reggae bars are normally very well lit, welcoming and full of geniune, friendly people, though you do still have to watch your back
