| Posted Nov 3, 2009 by Count Zero I don't think so, but that page didn't really describe everything it was installing, just that it was most of the essential media plug-ins. For instance, other than in the subject line of the question it was answering it didn't mention that it included Flash.
That looks like a handy program so I'll probably D/L it when I get home.

Posted Nov 3, 2009 by Count Zero Oh, and obviously I wasn't very observant: "Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding, support for various other audio formats (GStreamer plugins), Microsoft fonts, Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, LAME (to create compressed audio files), and DVD playback."

Posted Nov 9, 2009 by Count Zero Well, apparently my troubles aren't over yet.
Friday I installed a new N series wifi router and DSL modem combo. That went quite well, surprisingly. I thought I would have to get on the phone to, at least, give my ISP the MAC address for the new modem, but I didn't. It set itself up fairly well. I had to leave it unsecured, but I'm not overly concerned about that. I don't mind sharing wifi with the neighbors.
Everything was working well. I had about twice the signal upstairs as I did with the old one. And if I pick up one of those USB N series wifi doohickies, I'll have an even better connection.
Sunday... No internet!
OK, power off and on the new router... nothing... check through the computer... nothing. At least the new router has a dedicated LED for "internet"... it's glowing bright red to indicate something is wrong.
I put a call in to the ISP and their automated system indicated there is something wrong with the line but it couldn't automatically correct it so I had to talk to someone (half a world away) and they'll see if they can fix it. I'll find out when I get home if they were successful.
I'm hoping they do indeed find a problem since this is exactly the sort of problem I've been having for months. Intermittent loss of DNS server connection. I've spent $300 on my end to upgrade or reconfigure my system to no avail.

Posted Nov 10, 2009 by Count Zero Got word last night that a tech will be out to the house on Thursday.
Who wants to bet that he tries to blame the problem on my new router/modem?

Posted Nov 11, 2009 by fords (vegetarians DON'T eat fish!) We constantly have problems with our interweb connection so I can totally sympathise. Everything has been blamed, from our router (we've had two from the company and both are actually fine), our phone line, cavity wall insulation and even the network card in the PC. Now we're lucky to get 512k at peak times, when we usually get at least 2 meg

Posted Nov 11, 2009 by Vip We're just so far away from the exchange that, even if everything is working perfectly, we get rubbish speeds.

Posted 5 Weeks Ago by Count Zero Well, the service tech was just here... And you'll never guess the diagnosis. "We don't support that modem."
Well, then tell me why it worked fine for two days!
As it stands now we are using the tech's modem/router until a new one arrives at a price of $70. I think the tech that came here really didn't know what the hell he was doing. He finally called another tech and that guy might be able to get my Netgear modem to work with it by calling it in as a "model 6100" which they do support, or at least is compatible. Like I said, mine worked great for two days so obviously it is compatible.
We are very close to changing ISPs.

That analysis has my vote.

Posted 5 Weeks Ago by Count Zero Yep, the other tech fixed it. Of course, now we're having trouble canceling the order for another modem/router.

Posted 5 Weeks Ago by Count Zero They couldn't actually cancel it, so Monday we're supposed to refuse the delivery.

Posted 5 Weeks Ago by No, four Goshos. Goshos for forks Or you could just accept it and eBay it, denying all knowledge of a delivery.
But you didn't hear that from me, right?

| |
Posted 5 Weeks Ago by Count Zero But then we'd have to pay the $70 charge. And they sell for only $20-$30 on eBay.
