Hong Kong- such a super city

I have just been reminded about Hong Kong by wandring star star and Paul H.

My eldest son was employed by an international firm soon after he qualified as a CA, and one of their first gifts to me was a trip to visit them in their very first home in Stanley bay.

What an experiemce it was. I loved every minute of it and also the subsequent visits I had when my daughter and her new husband also decided to settle in Hong Kong. Now my eldest son and his family live in London and I hardly ever see them. My daughter lives in Perth Australia and phones me every Sunday morning which is a joy.

I just loved travelling on the ferry between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Once I stayed on the ferry for four crossings. all the families were at work and I knew no-one and so just went on travelling across the river for a while.

I also met a most fascinating person on my first visit when I was taking a trip to the border which in those days was very much closed to visitors.

This very elegant chap marched up to the ticket office and presented a very clean bill of an enormous denomination. No one had any change so I offered to pay for his trip. It turned out that he lived in one of the Slav countries which had been occupied by the Soviets

We talked and talked and talked and I learnt so much. He subsequently visited England - I was still living in Africa and I never saw him again, but I certainly learnt about life behind the Iron Curtain as it was in those days. I do not think I have thought of him again until just now. I know we both loved classical music and I went to a wonderful concert which a visiting British Orchestra was giving and which was wonderful.

Gosh it was wonderful having my memory jogged like that.

Thank you wandring starstar star and Paul H.

Christiane

Aye! I have some right good memories of that place myself, I was there twice with a few years between visits and the changes were surprising!

In fact I have some great photos of them really high sky scrapers being built, and even some that I took after climbing way up height on their bamboo scaffolding, which was an experience in itself winkeye

cheers Smudger.
