Posted Sep 21, 2007 by Recumbentman We did. Never knew it was your ancestral home; thought you were Lancs.
We didn't go the length of the dale; we passed through Wensley, then a few days later through Hawes. Both being vegan, we didn't sample the cheese . . . despite the voice of Wallace ringing in our ears, "What's the matter with Wensleydale?"

Posted Sep 21, 2007 by Edward the Bonobo - andafewmore My mother's name was Bainbridge, after the village about three miles outside Hawes.
When my wife and I were staying in Upper Wharfedale (go out the back of Hawes, keep on going up up up, then down down down and you're there. Possibly best not done on a bike, even a recumb.), we made a pilgrimage. The only shop is the post office, so I went and bought a Bainbridge souvenir mug, explaining to the postmistress why. She said two rather unusual things:
"We get quite a few people in here called Bainbridge."
I wonder why that might be?
"Funnily enough, though, there's nobody in the village called Bainbridge."
Now - if you think of how people acquired surnames in days of yore...it wouldn't make much sense to refer to someone as 'John from Bainbridge' when you're actually *in* Bainbridge.

Posted Sep 22, 2007 by Recumbentman Good point. We have families in Ireland called English, and plenty called Walsh, for which the Irish is Breathnach (Bretonnic). Not forgetting Percy French and plenty of Higginses (Vikings). Don't know anybody called Irish; Aaron doesn't really qualify.
We didn't pass through Bainbridge (our vet is called Bainbridge by the way). Our Dales tour went Grassington - Kettlewell - Leyburn; Grinton - Tan Hill - Winton - Kirkby Stephen; Hawes - Ingleton; Austwick - Giggleswick - Hellifield - Airton - Burnsall; Greenhow - Fewstone - Harrogate then on to York.
