Alternatives to sandwiches...

Why not do something different? You could do a pasta salad, or a rice salad (both of which you could warm up, if you have access to a microwave)... Or pack a couple of roasted chicken legs, a tomato or two, a spring onion, a few salad leaves and a sharp knife, and make your lunch as you eat it?

Not forgetting things like cornish pasties, sausage rolls, and so on...

Or for something *really* different, how about sushi?

couscous salads are nice, as are rice salads.

Try couscous with sundried tomatoes and fresh torn basil leaves (the basil is picked from your pot of growing basil which you can buy at the local supermarket and pray you don't kill it before the time you want to eat it)

My grandfather used to have a massive old thermos flask and we would be able to feed 4 adults and two children with the Irish traditional food Champ.

Mashed potato and scallions (spring onions) with knobs of butter.

When you are having a packed lunch in Ireland even in the height of summer you have to consider staying warm. smiley

Often overlooked for packed lunches is pizza. Good either as the main part of your meal, or something extra to nibble on.

I usually prepare enough the night before to take leftovers of some sort. If it's roasted chicken I make a chicken salad with homemade olive-oil mayo (I don't like regular mayo so it's the only way I'll do it) and fresh dill or with tzatziki instead of the mayo/dill. If I have left over rice/pasta/couscous I throw it into the salad as well. Beef or pork also make great salad.

A nice piece of fruit and some tomato/veggie juice and it's a great lunch.

on the topic of salads, I do a slightly spicy potato salad that uses tomatoes. I nice pick-me-up for a sleepy day.

Hmm ever had nasi lemak?

Its Malay and bloody nice.

Unfourtunately I can't make it, but my girlfriend's maid can.
Oh anyway it consists of, (nice)rice, ikan bilis (anchovies), chicken, a fried egg, and erm sweet curry sauce and nuts.

Seriously it sounds like crap but tastes like heaven.

Hmm actually why are students so obliged to eat vast swathes of cheese?

Cheese is a big thing round my way, along with other staples as beer (cheap please) and high grade cannabis.

Just an observation.
