This Edited Guide Entry is one of six sub-divisions of the mammoth Community collaboration on Great Castles. Links to the remaining five entries can be found at the bottom of the page.

Culzean Castle - Ayrshire, Scotland

Another brilliant folly, this castle is perched on the sea cliffs with beautiful views. Totally rebuilt in the 1700s by Robert Adam, it appears on the back of the Scottish five-pound note. Oh, and it has some lovely grounds which you can take days to explore.

Dumbarton Castle - Dumbarton, Scotland

This is Macbeth's castle (yes he of Shakespeare fame), when he was king. It guards the entrance to the Clyde, is built on a huge rock, was re-fortified up until the Napoleonic Wars. Lots of up and down walking but some stunning views from the battlements.
