Guides

Transport

Getting to Islington is easy. There are two stations, Angel tube station with the Northern Line and Highbury & Islington station, with the Victoria Line and Silverlink Metro mainline train service to Stratford. Plenty of bus routes, including the 43, which goes to Liverpool Street, also serve the area.

Style

Islington has oodles of style, and it knows it. Self-conciously hip, Islington is famed for its artist and celebrity residents. No longer cheap enough to sustain the broke artists it once held, Islington retains some of that style nevertheless. Having more than its fair share of cafes, resteraunts and art/design shops, Islington is still a great place to hang out. In Islington, everything is minimilist, reduced down to simple angular designs and bold colours. Above all, Islington is trendy, and so if you are there, you need to be too.

Geography

The most important road in Islington is Upper Street, which stretches all the way from Angel tube to Highbury & Islington stations. The road is lined completely with shops, resteraunts, bars and cafes, with the Angel end being slightly more prestigous. This High Street is a very wide boulevard, to match any from Paris. Once upon a time there was trams tinkering both ways down the street but sadly now it's busy with car traffic. A little way down from Angel tube, the road branches into two, the other half called Essex Road. In the middle of this triangular section is Islington Green, a small park with grass and benches. Just opposite Angel tube station, on a road leading off from Upper Street is Chapel Market, where the market (of the same name) is held, and where a new commercial centre is being constructed.

Beggars

Islington is full of beggars, who clearly flock to the area to get a little money from the charity-giving tourists and locals. The sight of these beggars somehow goes against the style of the area, and reminds you that Islington is not really a rich borough at all. You will soon become accoustomed to the sight of them. Sadly there are far fewer buskers than beggars. Whether you give to the beggars is up to you.
