In this week's Talking Point, we look at the controversial question of teenage sex.

The British government has recently announced a funding package of £60 million over the next three years to curb the level of teenage pregnancies. Tony Blair has said that he has 'strong views' on young people having sex before the age of 16 and has insisted that teenagers must be given more confidence to say 'no'.

In America movements such as True Love Waits have brought the issue of premarital sex onto the national agenda. Their website claims 'Over a million students have pledged: 'Believing that true love waits, I make a commitment to God, myself, my family, my friends, my future mate, and my future children to be sexually abstinent from this day until the day I enter a biblical marriage relationship.' Teen pop queen, Britney Spears, has pledged also she will not have sex prior to marriage despite her overtly sexual videos.

So should we be encouraging teenagers to wait? How do we educate them properly when the media is full of sexual images?

  • Do you think being a virgin is cool?
  • Is sex education the duty of schools or parents?
  • Should the age of consent be raised or lowered?
  • Is waiting until you are married before having sex an outdated notion?
  • Does the media put pressure on teenagers to be sexually active?
  • Is it all a matter of hormones?
  • Should underage teens be given confidential contraceptive advice?
  • Is this a issue for politicians, or should they be concentrating on more important things?

Tell us what you think...
