"Your Plastic Pal who's fun to be with"
Marvin is a prototype robot made by the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation programmed with a GPP-"Genuine People Personality". Unfortunately for everyone around him, Marvin was programmed with a manic depressive personality; furthermore, there was also a defect in his manufacturing that gives him a throbbing pain in the diodes down his left side.
Marvin has an extraordinary ability to persuade other cybernetic objects with A.I.s to commit suicide. He has saved his "friends" (Zaphod, Arthur, Ford, and Trillian) many times with this ability.
