Having been involved in the industry for 25 years Monarch Spas have always looked at reducing their environmental impact.
How has this been achieved?
1. We stopped the use of a solevnt based stain for all our timber products and cabinet cladding. We now use a waterbased stain that is free from VOC's or Volatile Organic Compounds.
2. We source all our timber (both structural and cladding) from responsibly managed forests and source this as close as possible to our manufacuring plant in Melbourne.
3. We have never and will never use two-pack foam as insulation due to the massive levels of VOCs emitted during its manufacture and application. This is used by just about every other Hot Tub / Spa manufacturer in the world. It is used because less fibreglass is required to reinforce the spa shell so that the foam takes all the weight of water. Unfortunately for the environment the Volatile Organic Compounds foam releases are responsible for Ozone layer depletion, soil damage, groundwater pollution, and worst of all lung damage/respiritory problems for the workers using it.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volatile_organic_compound for more info.
We use a triple layer wool/foil laminate which is fixed around all sides of the Spa cabinet, then add a thick wadding of synthetic fibre, like loft insulation, except this isnt hazardous in any way. In fact its fully recylcable, hypo-allergenic and fire retardant.
By using more fibregalss reinforcemt, our self supporting shells enable us to do away with the usual foam support, while creating a better insulated product. Better insulation = less heat loss = lower energy consuption.
4. We now offer an optional sythetic cabinet, made from 100% recycled material, in leiu of the normal cedar cladding.
5. We use a programable circulation pump to heat and filter the water. This is also used in conjuction with a heat recovery system so that excess heat generated by the pumps and other equipment helps to heat the spa. Fully foamed often spas vent this heat to the oustside wasting lots of energy.
6. Our intelligent control system filters the water in the spa and heats it. The water must be filtered for 8 hours per day, and the water must be kept at a constant temperature. This is the clever bit; the controller calcuates how much time the pump has been running for the heating cycles in a 24hr period. It then subtracts this time, from the remaining time on the filtration cycles so that the pump is only used for a minimum. This makes our spas the most economical spas of their kind with much lower running costs.
So at least you can own a hot tub without feeling guilty that you could have done more for the environment with your choice of brand.
