Contrary to popular opinion, trees, when cut, do bleed. Their blood is clear and yellowish, and hardens quickly when exposed to air. Occasionally, an unsuspecting insect, who was happily sitting on the tree when it started bleeding, is caught in the flow and therefore rendered incapable of flight.
