The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions. My war started in 1939 when I worked at the Hendon police college which was only for officers at the time. I was in the catering department.It was the first time that I had been asked to work on a Sunday - it was Sunday 3rd September. We were told that there was to be an important broadcast at 11 am and we could all go into the restroom and listen to the broadcast. We were then at war with Germany. We were then sent home with instructions to come in the following day. At the end of the following day we were all called in and told that they would be evacuating the whole place. I was paid £6 in lieu of notice. I could not get home quickly enough to give it to my mum.
