Farncombe is north of and adjacent to Godalming which itself is about 5 miles south of Guildford. It is however, almost impossible to find Farncombe before finding Godalming.
The village provides a magical counterweight to the relatively large and vacuuous small town of Godalming, by itself being very small and packed very tightly with useful things.
It contains a disproportionately large number of shops including:
Wakeling's butcher (one of the best on the planet), ABC music (purveyors of noise making equipment), three pubs, a Co-Op, a bank, a barbers, 2 hairdressers, 2 white goods shops, a DIY shop, a Chinese takeaway which doubles as a chippy, 2 dedicated chippies, an Indian takeaway, an Indian restaurant (with takeaway), a 2nd hand TV and Video shop (+repairs), a 2nd hand washing machine shop (+repairs), a video rental shop, a bakers, a car showroom, 2 repair garages, a car parts shop, a florist, a train station, a leisure centre. It will soon have a pizza delivery shop. The reason for this addition is entirely unclear as up to now the village has had an agreeable arrangement with Godalming whereby it has been allowed use of their pizza delivery service in exchange for Godalming getting to have the actual shop and associated nuisance within its own boundaries.
Farncombe is also the proud owner of a large pond. This is used almost exclusively for dangling pieces of thin string in. These are tied to long sticks and occasionally become entangled in the jaws of a Fish (><>). The string then must be removed from the Fish's mouth to allow the dangler to continue his work. Apparently, all danglers are buddhist vegetarians as they never eat the Fish. It might be worth researching this method for catching Fish deliberately.
The population of farncombe is currently around 4 though in the very early morning and late evening it swells to 2 million when all the commuters in the south of England immigrate to use the train station and parking.
The best pub locally is the Cricketers whose clientele is collectively and paradoxically, very keen on golf and football. It serves excellent food and beer and its fireplaces and radiators heat the entire county by being so hot.
It is apparently possible to walk to Godalming from Farncombe. It has been suggested that this would take around 5 minutes. Most people, however, find that leaving Farncombe is usually entirely unnecessary in the usual course of things.
