DCC was a stategically planned cock-up for Philips. After years of staleness in their Compact Cassette (the standard one still used now), Philips decided to bring it into the digital age. Unfortunately, the DCC was released just after Sony had released the MiniDisc - a much better replacement for the cassette catching on slowly. This meant the standard died instantaniously - as not only did a better competing standard come out before but there was fearmongering against any new standard. Only now is MiniDisc really entering the market but again it has been hit by all the new standards of DVD, SuperCD and another evil-now-dead standard - DIVX. This is uncharacteristic for Sony, with events until then usually going in the VHS-Betacam style1.
