I have just bought two small (and quiet!) off-road motorcycles for myself and my son as a means of getting him out into the fresh air and away from his computer. We are very disappointed by the attitude of those who are already incredibly well supplied with public rights of way, RUPPs and bridleways but who still want to deny perfectly respectable and considerate people like us access to the only off-road resources remaining available to us, ie by-ways. Many English by-ways have been deliberately and illegally blocked by landowners or other groups, or deliberately mangled to prevent perfectly harmless usage by others. The 'dog in the manger' attitude of those who arbitrarily assign negative social characteristics to those who don't share their interests is an odious form of 'NIMBYism' and a sad reflection of where we are in this country nowadays. Anyone using a by-way in Wiltshire will be hard pushed to find anyone else on them, and yet those of us who would like to use by-ways properly and responsibly to enrich our children's lives are being pressured out and made to feel like social pariahs.
