The rockery: beforeIt's obvious to see the difference a few volunteers can make.

The Duke of York Gardens used to have much more to offer not so long ago, it still has many blossom trees which look wonderful when in full bloom, however many of the garden's assets have dissapeared over the years.

Volunteers making a differenceWe used to have a band stand, which was demolished and a beautiful raised flower bed was put there instead, but this has now gone and all we are left with is a dull circular area of grass (which would be an ideal location for a sculpture) also tennis courts, an aviary and public toilets have disappeared in recent years.

Moving rubbish by bikeNot too long ago we used to have a couple of ornamental ponds, these have since been filled in and a rockery put there, unfortunately the rockery hasn't been maintained so we (the Friends of the Freshney) decided to do something about it.

The finished rockeryMaking a difference is the easy part, but changing attitudes and restoring local pride in the area is a much harder task (see my previous postings).
