about
Film Network is the BBC’s interactive showcase for new British filmmakers, screening three new short films in broadband quality every week, adding to a growing catalogue of great shorts. The site allows people to comment on and rate films and also provides filmmakers with tools to create online profiles and exchange tips, advice and ideas. The purpose is to expose new talent and create a platform for some great films that are rarely seen elsewhere. where do the films come from?
Around a third of the films featured on Film Network are submitted directly to the site and selected by the in-house team. If you are a filmmaker you can submit your short by filling out a simple online form. The remaining films are selected in partnership with other organisations and experts who we invite to curate programmes of shorts. These include distributors, festivals and competitions. working with the industry
Film Network aims to support the British film industry by collaborating with all the key organisations. We provide a showcase for the industry by hosting selections of shorts picked by different organisations and each organisation has their own homepage. We also have an industry panel, comprising of a growing number of established professionals including: distributors, festival programmers, regional commissioners, funders and established filmmakers. Our panel regularly watch shorts featured on the site and give feedback via the site. We aim to work with as many organisations within the industry as possible. If you work for an organisation that would be interested in collaborating with Film Network, please send us an email. Film Network membership

Film Network is constantly trying to develop new ways of screening film. From April 2006-07, Film Network ran a 12-month trial which allowed users to watch a selection of the very best shorts as hi-resolution downloads in full screen, at a quality similar to a DVD. The trial was very successful but alas has now reached its end. You can also watch some of the shortest films showing on Film Network on your mobile. Simply text ‘Film Network’ to 81010 and we’ll send you a link. background
Film Network launched as a six-month trial in early 2005 in collaboration with the UK Film Council’s New Cinema Fund, who provided us with 42 shorts made through their digital shorts scheme to help kick-start the site. The purpose of the trial was to work out the best way to support new filmmakers and partner the industry. The trial was deemed a success and the full service launched in October 2005 in partnership with many of the industry's key organisations. By October 2006 we had over 300 shorts available to watch in our film catalogue. In April 2006 we launched our free download subscription application that delivered the best shorts to your desktop as hi-resolution, full-screen downloads. Subscribers to the application received three new shorts automatically downloaded to their computer every fortnight, in the background. After 28 days, the films automatically deleted. Hi-res downloads were offered as a 12-month trial from April 2006 to April 2007. feedback
