synopsis
In the rare books reading room of the British Library, Jess falls in love with a gorgeous young man. Too shy to talk to him, she ‘borrows’ his library card and starts to send him books, whose titles spell out her feelings for him. At first, her campaign doesn’t seem to be a success; then Jess receives a book in return.

Jess is thrilled – but then she’s heart-broken to see her man leave the library on the arm of another woman. As books keep coming for her, Jess realises that she too must have a secret admirer. But who on earth can it be?

short fact
"I had been producing shorts and features for a long time and was looking for a short to direct but couldn't find the right script.

Then Wendy Bevan-Mogg sent me the adaptation of Rare Books and Manuscripts which I felt was a very good, commercial short. It appeals to me as it's all about modern dating, behind computers and on the internet where you can be more bold than you actually are.

Neve McIntosh wrote/improvised a lot of the witty dialogue and was a major part of making this film as charming as it is."

Pretty good. Nicely paced, well shot, a likeable protagonist and the overall premise (credit to the short story author Toby Litt) was good. Didn't blow me away, but a good effort. C+

Great pacing! I especially liked the books being slapped onto the counter.
Belle & Sebastian are always a hit with me! The song really complimented the film.
