synopsis
A desperate woman holds up a sperm bank but is disarmed by a sympathetic security guard also looking for love.
short fact
The first-time producers raised £60,000 in donations by asking every man they met to donate their sperm and give the proceeds to the film – the story of a desperate woman who breaks into a sperm bank. When the producers got a great response to asking their friends to put their hands in their pockets and see what they came up with, they decided to create a cheeky press release detailing the romantic comedy and unusual method of financing. This innovative approach gained an unprecedented amount of press coverage for an un-produced short including interviews on BBC Radio London and the Channel 5 News, an article in Screen International, a spunky editorial in Empire Magazine and James Christopher from The Times awarded them ‘Best Pitch in Cannes’ 2003. Over the course of one year Farah, Kerry and Pippa became known as the Sperm Angels and persuaded some of the tightest fists in the UK, Ireland, Cannes and Australia to donate, raising the funding and crucial in-kind sponsorship from key service providers needed to shoot over three days in August 2003. And the UK Film Council Completion Fund helped them finish the job. The script of No Deposit, No Return by new writer Jonathan Edwards was sourced at a Rocliffe New Writing Forum in 2002, with resident Rocliffe director Dallas Campbell coming on board as director and co-writer, and resident casting director Mandy Steele also committing. In keeping with Rocliffe’s mentoring philosophy, the producers gathered a crew which was a mixture of more established heads of departments and less experienced crew. Location costs were drastically reduced by offering a drama day and a film career presentation at the school where filming took place, and several students were runners.
