synopsis
When something goes bump in the night, most have the sense to realise that it’s little more than the radiator settling. Jay on the other hand...One bang in the pipes and he’s convinced someone has broken in, with murder on their mind.

After reassurance from loyal girlfriend Amy, he manages to settle down…almost. Another creak and he’s bolt upright and wide awake, and unfortunately so is she. Central heating? Perhaps. The cat? Maybe. But Jay’s not so sure, and feeling it’s his duty as a man he heads downstairs to investigate.

This film has chosen to be part of the BBC's Summer of British Film: Thriller season. For more info please visit: summer of british film
short fact
The first production by Damyan Filmworks, 4:37 is based around the universal fear of what lingers in the dark.

Houses do make strange noises at night, all perfectly innocent, but try telling that to your imagination, when you’re alone,in the dark. It’s easy to mistake clanging pipes for the footfalls of a knife-wielding maniac, and are you really so sure that it is just the pipes.

Shot day-for-night on DigiBeta over three days in August 2002 (unfortunately managing to pick the three hottest of the year), it stars Luke Mably (28 Days Later, The Prince and Me) as paranoid hero Jay, and Liza Walker (London’s Burning) as long suffering girlfriend Amy.

I believe this film depended on two elements if it was going to be successful. Suspense and 'the twist'. Because the suspense was so poor, partly because the acting felt very unrealistic, the twist became way too predictable and very cliched. I want my 9 minutes back

Really liked the way this short played with my expectations. The protagonist was obnoxious (nice choice making the audience follow an unlikable character) I cheerfully hoped/expected to see him maimed/killed, especially when he went to the toilet but I liked the twist, I love dark tales. The opening crane shot going through the curtains was a stunning opening. Good work all round!

You'll find no bump in the night waking me up at 4.37am. I'm truly gone, meaning that I'm one of the lucky few to get a decent night's sleep. As I mentioned in my commentary on Connecting before watching 4.37, Turner 'knows how to create action...with a sense of humour'. It shows here as well. We find comedy with the cricket bat to later react uncomfortably to the unexpected incident in the living room. I jumped anyway. Who didn't? As for the mystery man, who knows? Swinger? (Hehe.) Plot flaws aside, his introduction [mystery man] is interesting and his timing adds to the suspense.
