synopsis
"Camouflage explores the experience of children growing up with schizophrenic parents. Based on extensive personal testimony it compares a personal experience with that of others, using interviews, drawings and animation, live action and digital composition."

This film was chosen to be part of the BBC Summer of British Film (shorts): Social Realism season. Watch more SOBF: Social Realism shorts on film network.
short fact
My mother has suffered from schizophrenia since I was seven but received no treatment until I was eighteen. At first I thought that the strange things she said were true, but when I realised that no one else thought that way, I became embarrassed and ashamed and tried to keep her illness a secret. I felt great resentment and my love for her gradually dwindled. Eventually the structure of our family completely fell apart. This film is my attempt to explain something of what it’s like to grow up with a schizophrenic parent and the emotional devastation that it can bring.

The voices and animation seemed natural and together quite emotive, but I felt the acting parts destroyed the integrity of the peice. The conflictions between animation and film, between past and present and the reversed dependancy of mother and daughter seemed merely conflictions in style and on paper than frightening portrayals of a child's perception of a distorted mentally ill mind; a mind belonging to its own mother.
The unrealistic filmed parts left everything else feeling somehow fake and therefore unimportant.

Very good -especially the use of testimony plus imaginative animation and acting. I have worked with mentally ill people as an art therapist - but without contact with other members of the family.
