synopsis
Mali's job is to visit the homes of frail elderly people and provide the care they can no longer give to themselves - but not everyone is happy to accept his help. When Mali enters Archie's home, and world, it is clear he is not welcome. Archie may be old but he is not ready to give in without a fight. The two men begin a spiky struggle to work out who is in control.

This film was chosen to be part of the BBC Summer of British Film (shorts): Social Realism season. Watch more SOBF: Social Realism shorts on film network.
short fact
"The idea for the script came from watching my own Grandparents and other elderly people deal with the challenges this part of life throws up for us. Perhaps the hardest part of the project was marrying the performances of non-proFESSionals with proFESSional actors and finding a form for the film within this particular combination. There were many praCtical challenges on the project for the whole team with our very limited budget. Post production took a fairly long time to complete as by this stage we were all out of money!"

Care has been nominated for Best Short Film at this year's Orange British Film Awards.

This film was a joy to watch and so perfectly conceived as a short. I loved it all but particularly enjoyed the brief scene wherein Mali lit the lady's cigarette. Wonderfully framed and a very real piece of this world I thought.

Brilliant writing and direction. Superb acting by Shaun Parkes and Peter Vaughan under your direction. There is real genius in the photography, particularly, the well thought out mid-shots where every piece is perfectly placed and framed like a work of art.

The close-ups are amazing, beautifully photographed and the varied angles in the close-ups were of great import. I loved the warm tones in the color to match the warmth of this piece. Only a person who has been intimately involved with elderly people and their feelings of helplessness, anger and sometimes cantankerousness over their condition would understand how much has been captured here. I loved the use of the two different bathtub scenes, the later one like a baptism performed by Mali with a light in a finally acquiescing Archie. Both characters evolved through the conflict. You were certainly blessed with music and composing. Film worth every pence! In fact your producers got a work of art for their investment. I wish you many awards for this piece and your rightful place in film as an impeccable filmmaker and storyteller.

Solid film; a simple story told with "care". Recommended

it feels very much like a film that was made to show a sensitive subject, rather than the writer expressing their own feelings and experiences.

ah man... that is a beautiful short film. the pacing is just artful, how it gives

intense, but not over-dramatised snippets of action, sewn together with establishing and

time lapse shots accompanied by music.. seamlessly integrated little delicate shots like

the curtain fluttering out of the drafty window, bringin us into the restful space and

seeing a young woman's photo, with an old woman's voice, just really genuine,

convincing storytelling. impeccable acting and amelie reminiscent flavour-enhancing

soundtrack make this taste of hidden lives really special for me. enlightening but not

self-proclaiming, i found this memorably thought provoking on the themes of the elderly

and their frustrations growing old and being looked after. (my favourite shot in this is probably marley gazing at the running taps/boiling eggs)
