synopsis
Youths where I live are regarded by adults with distrust and not much effort is made to get their perspective. Songbird addresses this issue from the point of view of one such youth. For most of the film we see him as a malicious predator. But then we find out he is to be evicted from home and our view alters. He is malicious but disturbed too, his aggression stemming from personal inadequacy and confusion. The film ends inconclusively. Catharsis would provide resolution – but the youth’s dilemmas are habitual and I wanted to suggest this.
short fact
Unusually for October the sun had blazed all morning. In the afternoon things went downhill. Ironically, given the subject matter, local youths where we were shooting, decided to shoot us – with fireworks. Filming was suspended and the police were called. Calm was restored after the art director had chased and caught the chief offender, who dutifully apologised to the entire crew. He was informed that shooting fireworks at film crews may be one cure for boredom but we couldn’t recommend it."
