Message 1 - posted by manc-host2, Sep 14, 2007 Two graffiti artists have been locked up for spray painting trains and railway bridges in and around Manchester. They were traced by British Transport Police who tracked website postings of their work under their tags Krek and Mers. The cost of damage caused is put at £30,000. Does the punishment fit the crime? Or is it excessive to jail people who paint pictures with spray cans? |

Message 2 - posted by djkearney, Sep 14, 2007 I'm glad they were jailed. Graffiti isn't art, it's vandalism and they were old enough to know better. |

Message 4 - posted by Whywally, Sep 14, 2007 No the punishment does not fit the crime. It should have been 13 years. The country looks like a toilet because of people like them. No respect for other peoples property. Awful double standards. |

Message 5 - posted by HAMPTONCAUGHT, Sep 15, 2007 They deserve locking up,after causing thousands of pounds worth of damage by their selfish, childish actions. These are two grown men who should have known better,I see that the parents are bleating, well hard lines they got what they deserve. One of the men has has lost his chance to go to Uni.proving that they are not stupid morons but so called intelligent people. We can not have double standards just because these men come from good families, crime is crime and if we are to try to stamp it out then this is a good beginning.Stop moaning, it is not 'art'but mindless vandalism and needs to be treated as such and all those idiots who go round saying 'it,s street art, culture etc' should be joining them inside. |

Message 6 - posted by pompomwhiting, Sep 15, 2007 £30,000? Was that really necessary. I don't suppose the police would care to peruse the street lighted path I walk daily trying to avoid the scattered beer cans and broken glass.
Pom sp 30 criminal. |

Message 7 - posted by HAMPTONCAUGHT, Sep 15, 2007 Yes £30,000 that will no doubt be coming out of us mugs who go to work and pay taxes. They should be made to pay for it themselves as well as going to jail, and if they can not pay then I'm sure their doting parents could make a contribution. |

Message 11 - posted by Bazza, Sep 18, 2007 They obviusly have an artistic talent, and appear too have social fustration of identity.
They harmed no one, yet are now marked as criminals.
What a strange world we live today, sort of like the Victorian era!

Message 14 - posted by weemanvii, Sep 18, 2007 The jails in this country are hugely over crowded and we wonder why? 12 and 15 months is a ridiculous sentance for a crime with no direct victims. I also find some of the comments on here astounding! How can people call for even longer sentances or even say that the punishment is suitable?!? Looks at the punishment given to Chris Langham, is graffiti a worse crime than downloading child porn? I think the answer is pretty obvious.
And one more thing, why does the value of the damage done keep on changing? First it was £11000, then £15000, then £30000, trying to justify an overly officious jail sentance and stir the daily mail readers into a storm perhaps? |

Message 15 - posted by Alexander Rednaxela, Sep 18, 2007 Graffiti is art. Vandalism isnt.
Maybe it cost 30k to clean up, how much more of tax payers money is it going to cost to keep them both locked up for 2 years ?
Why not make them do something constructive like cleaning up an area that was affected by the graffiti. Make them realise how difficult it is to clean up, make them speak to the people who have had their houses "tagged".
Instead they are probably now going to learn some better trades like hotwiring cars. |

It may be art, but that's only if it's in the proper place - NOT defacing trains. They are vandals and deserve to be treated as such. |

Message 18 - posted by HAMPTONCAUGHT, Sep 19, 2007 Either we have zero tolerance on crime and try to take the streets back or we surrender to all the criminals, graffiti scrawlers included. We cannot have double standards for certain types. |

Just wanted to say that I am not one who wonders why. The reason the jails are overcrowded is because, despite more than enough warnings, the government has not built enough prisons to cater for the upward trend in the number of criminals. |

Message 20 - posted by Junk2Rubbish, Sep 19, 2007 Due to the crime rate going down there, it looks like we could rent a few prisons in Romania ... www.dailymail.co.uk/...(No, I'm not putting two and two together like the mail, just showing a place where there's some space.) |
