After an armed gang fired a shotgun at two unarmed officers in Bolton, we ask: do you want to see all officers carrying guns in Greater Manchester; or would arming the police lead to an escalation in gun crime?

Nevermind arming police. They need to go through serious discipline first. The Police ought acting like people who are concerned with the well-being of our country, rather to ignore complaints and refuse to put criminals away. If they abuse their power without weapons, the question is, how would they be able to behave themselves with weapons. Responsibility first and foremost.

It is time for the British Police to be armed. We cannot expect our police to protect us & themselves against increasingly dangerous, arrogant & heavily armed criminals. We will not end up like gun-toting USA before anyone chirps up with that old chestnut. The UK is one of very few countries in the world that don't have permanently armed police. All countries in the EU apart from UK & EIRE are armed. Do we hear of mass gunfights in Switzerland or Holland ? No we don't & we won't have then here either, but our protectors deserve the same level of protection & resources as their European colleaugues. perhaps we could start fighting crime again.

You won't stop escalating gun crime by arming cops. The criminals will just get larger and more powerful guns. The way to stop gun crime is to make the punishment fit the crime.
What do murderers get nowadays? 4 years?
What sort of deterrent is that?

Life should mean life. Lock these gangsters up forever, that's the answer.

4 years? Have a look and that's before they'll be elligible for parole, not when they'll get out.

Here's a roll of honour. Look down the right hand sidefor some interesting satistics. 25% of police officers are killed with their own weapon.

Arming the police would cause an escalation in gun crime that would shock even you Mancman.

I've lived in Germany since 1987, so I'm used to seeing armed Police Officers on the streets and it makes me wonder how people seem to get the stupid idea that all coppers with guns have a gung ho, gunfight at the OK coralle mentallity, because it's absolute rubbish. Give the poor guys the chance to defend themselves at long last.

I agree with you on this. I think it's unsafe and unfair to put a police officer in the position of putting his life on the line to fight crime but not giving him the necessary protection to do that.

The carrying of guns in the UK should be voted on by the Police....I believe the last time they had a poll it was defeated by the Police themselves.....Violence begets violence.....In Canada we have more "accidents" by the police and public and the police always come off better....The police are allowed to investigate the matter themselves and hope the public forgets...At least in the UK the police have to answer to other bodies... Here recently a policeman thought a stolen car was being directed at him and fired 16 times killing a 16yr old teenager.....recently an American was killed by a shot to the head by a rookie woman cop--absolutely no witnesses...A kid was carrying a sony walkman and in a dark car lot the officer thought it was a gun directed at him and killed him...The kids dad was English and got no-where with the police...Canada has half the UK population and twice the killings with guns....The Govt 2 years ago tried to bring in gun control at a cost of a billion dollars but it turned out to be huge waste of money because people are holding onto thier guns...The Govt gave up.....For all thier faults the British Bobby is the envy of the world......Ian...vancouver

I passed two on duty police officers today and the only reason I know/think they were policemen was because it was written in big letters on their backs; otherwise at 4' 6", without a shaving rash between them, they could easily have been two kids on school work placement.

Gun? More tempted to confinscate their catapults.

Weapons only save lives in the right hands and police standards are dropping; only those proven fit and able should be armed and accountable.

What remote need is there for routine arming? We'll all need guns to protect ourselves.

Do you have a problem with 16 year olds joining the army then? when people are young, they can be educated more readily than an older officer.

Incidently though giving guns to police in Longsight would be like a declaration of war to the thugs that hang around there...

Do Chief Contables of big urban areas really want them to end up like Dodge City?

At the beginning of every shift half a dozen young cops should come down the front steps of the cop shop and let rip an untidy fusilade just to let us mere mortals and the chavs know whos in charge.

"as the criminals knowing the police are armed will not hesitat to open fire at them". Right. And seen as rascism is rife within the ranks of the Police Force who do you think will be targetted. Personal experience has allowed me to see things done to racial groups which some may find hard to believe. Only responsible people ought to have power and yet the government does not seem to understand this crucial point. "With great power comes great responsibility"...perhaps the Governement ought to watch that film a few times over.
