The States of Jersey voted today on the introduction of the smoking in enclosed work places ban.

The ban comes into force across the islands pubs, clubs, restaurants and bars from Tuesday 2 January 2007 at 4am.

Good idea? Bad idea? Couldn't care less?

From 4 am, why 4 am for goodness sake?

Would have been interested to see what would happen if it had been from midnight on December 31st <biggrin>

Why wait 5 weeks and why not make it universal?

What do you mean by universal? There are very few exemptions to the enclosed spaces law.

Apparently it was banned completely on Mars and
Venus several years ago.

Just ban smoking altogether on the island indoors and out.

How does smoking outside potentially affect the health of non-smokers?

It's not just about health, although that's obviously the biggest issue. The stink from cigarette smoke is disgusting, and it's on your clothes and hair even after an hour or so in a pub. To be fair to smoker's though, they obviously have no idea how bad it is. It's worse than BO or bad breath!

Smoking ban - good thing. Perhaps it will persuade more people to give up

The introduction of The Smoking, Health and Social Care Act was passed to give everyone equal rights to fresh air, not as a smite on smokers rights.

Therefore the Act is intended to give equal rights to all, rather than victimising the smokers or forcing non-smokers into passive smoking!

So is some aftershave or perfume - especially when the wearer has over done it!

Couldn't agree more, but that's another topic altogether!
