As someone who has had the good fortune to watch Marcus play cricket, both for Somerset and England, I am extremely sorry to hear of his current problems.

It does seem likely that he will not play cricket for England again and, indeed, his cricket career generally must be open to question.

But that is probably of minimal importance right now. What is vital is for him to recover his health, with the support of his family and close friends, and only then to look to the future.

Top flight sports men and women are clearly in the media, and therefore, the public spotlight more than ever these days.

It has been said of cricket in particular that it is as much a game played in the head as on the pitch, always assuming of course that a player has the required technical ability in the first place.

Cricket has certainly thrown up, more than most sports, people who have been unable to cope with the pressures or the lifestyle, or both, in some cases ending tragically.

A previous Somerset opening batsman and England player, Harold Gimblett is a case in point.

West Country journalist and author, David Foot, wrote a compelling and detailed yet sympathetic book on Harold's life, entitled The Tormented Genius of Cricket.

Harold was disturbed at points in his life and could never come truly to terms with "the demons" in his head.

From what people tell me he was a far more introverted character than Marcus, and Harold's condition led to him having a huge chip on his shoulder for much of his life.

I am told Marcus is a far more laid back and open sort of person and there is every reason to suppose he will completely regain his former health.

I certainly hope so and send my very best wishes to him.

I am positive that every Somerset supporter and sports followers generally echo this and I hope that Marcus is aware of it.

BN

That's a pathetic comment about someone who is clearly ill.

I hope that neither you nor someone close to you has the misfortune to suffer in that way.

The problem with mental illness is that it isnt visible and of course there is the stigma.
