Jonah, we could bring back the "cat" as well, give the cons a choice, long sentence or shorter sentence with a dozen lashes a day;)

(and before anyone jumps on me I know it will never happen in a civilised country, just having a little joke with Jonah<ok>)

Bread and water aka no1 diet can still be given as a punishment to anyone serving a period of detention in the forces.

No wonder there are recruitment problems.

ianforesthill. When figures like that are presented "Also the cost of keeping a prisoner in jail is very high, over $50,000 at a minimum here in Oz for a petty criminal" it raises the question, why does not the Government make the prisoners "pay" through labour, to fund them being in prisons. Would that not be logical, rather to have open prisions. The worst thing about open prisons is that the Government is relying upon computer to monitor where these criminals are, nevertheless, computers can malfuntion. A while back there was a case when a large amount of foreigners came in to the country and were lost on the database...is this not showing the weaknesses in our institutions.

Bring back the death penalty this will stop prison overcrowding and deter potential criminals from commiting crimes.

If the prisons are over crowded lets build more prisons to contain the scum bags,as about 60% reoffend lets build some cells that are really basic so that they are less inclined to want to return.

Cells with all the modern facilities do not seem to be having the right effect so lets go back in time a couple of decades to basic cells and to hell with their "human rights".

Here, here! There is a number of uninhabited islands around our coast. Send 'em there and let them rot.
