Rip off drinks prices in Restaurants/Bars

I don't know if anyone else feels the same, but I am sick of paying hugely inflated prices for a bottle of wine or a drink in a bar/restaurant. Yesterday we were charged 12 for 2 drinks(a small bottle of beer and a martini)in the Randolf's Morse Bar. The week before it was 16 for a cheap (undrinkable)bottle of wine in Branco's in Walton St. (which would have cost about 2.99 in the shops). I realise that they have overheads to cover, but I think this is extreme, and is just a rip-off. What does anyone else think?

The prices in Oxford are a bit on the steep side i must admit!! Although drinking in the Randolph is not going to help!! ;o)

From my experiences of the bars i go in, they hike the prices up so they can make it dirt cheap on student nights, so unless you have an NUS card im afraid it will always be the same!!

The value of something - whether it be a house or a bottle of wine - depends on how much the CURRENT purchaser is willing to pay. How much it (or a similar item) sold for previously is completely irrelevent.

The restaurant charge these prices because people seem willing to pay them - so you've really only got yourselves to blame!

I may be prepared 3 or 4 times the market price for a bottle of good wine to have it served in perfect condition to complement an excellent meal in good company in a stylish or comfortable setting attended by curteous staff. What's wrong with that? Doesn't stop me taking two or three anual booze cruises and stocking up with good and ordinary bottles to carry me swaying through every othe bacchanalian or routine event at home year round. you pay what it's worth at the time. I rarely see rip off except in bad pubs and restaurant to naive punters.

Having spent three years in the licensed trade I can tell you that the overheads are staggeringly high.

I think that most people would be surprised at exactly how much it costs to run a bar or restaurant and though the gross profit percentage is high - usually 50 to 60% across the board, it is like that for a reason.

I don't know the wine bar in question but my place was in Oxfordshire (Didcot) and the rent alone was in excess of 1500 a week. You have to sell a lot of 16 bottles of wine to cover that!

Remember too that the rent is only about 25% of the overhead.

I stopped going out in Oxford exactly because of this reason, but thats how i got around it. If you dont like the prices - Stop goimg out! or stop complaining.

The prices are higher than other places I've visited.

But I always take advantage of BOGOF or Happy Hours etc

The Goose is quite good for cheap drinks, but depending on the night you go out, you may not get served in quite a while. As everyone goes there first, so get your first drink takes awhile.
