Del - I have to agree with you about your son and I speak as a Christian here.

As it is, this afternoon over on the Christian Topic board I was told to have the same blind faith that Abraham had and I said exactly the same thing about the danger of 'blind faith'

Most Christians are very sincere people, they are just poorly taught and it is this that can cause the problems.
Now you understand why my lad would rather spend his time sailing and in the nets.

Del, your Son may find God in both of those activities, it's not a coincidence so many vicars play cricket (they also love steam trains) and there is something about sailing that can be very spiritual.

Sorry JoP if I think he's at risk of meeting cricketing vicars then he'll be gated from tonight. As to spiritual sailing I'm afraid he's fiercely competitive and if there are no thrills on the water then the enthusiasm will quickly be still born. He's not yet ready to face the melancholy of reviewing life the universe and everything. He may do that in short bursts at the end of alcohol sodden midweek winter nights in college when the driven dynamic structure of home and school give way to creative and erotic anarchy. No point rushing him, he's busy enough!

You sound like a near ideal soul mate. I'm glad that other young people echo the fun practical approach. But you are a little too much older and at this stage its vital that my boy paces himselves against his peers.

Yes Del I agree (I know you are not talking to me here) let your son discover things for himself and if or when he starts asking questions again, I hope he meets someone who will be honst with him and who will also listen to his questions, without just parrotting the Bible back.

I think I can answer the question, how can there be an all loving God, how can there be a God that supposedly knows everything therfore has supreme intelligence, YET still creates such uter imbiciles and annoyingly sad people such as JohnOfPaddington?

I really don't think there can be when we have to suffer such annoying comments from someone who has nothing better to do with his time than hang around a messageboard. This sort of debate is something I have discussed for hours with philosophers and theologians, cannot be answered in such a stupid comment such as his.

Ben - John may be annoying, everything you say he is, but God made him as well as you.

Judging by your post I would rather be with John and his silliness, than you and your self-righteousness.

If you have read some of the crap that he has posted I think that your opinion of me being "self-righteousness" will be changed.

Find out what the group is like? There is nothing wrong with reading the bible. Its your duty to find out if your son is telling the truth. Ask him what he discussed and learnt etc.
Reading the bible is a blessing in itself. Too few people do it let alone discuss it. Some people claim that by keeping the 10 commandments and coming to Church once in a while is being a good Christian. This is nothing but the truth.

I would be well pleased if someone in my class said that they did this and would be well inclined to do so myself.

Perhaps that's what Jesus meant when he said "Forgive them Father for they know not what they do"

Christians by worshiping Jesus as a God are breaking the comandment on worshiping false Gods. Non Christians by leading good lives and not worshiping a God are true to Gods word.

I think that's what he meant ;)

I wonder what religion Christ (Originally an ultra orthodox Jew of the Essene sect) would follow if he were alive today? ;)

Not Christianity I should think.

His teaching etc was more in line of the Pharisic tradition eg He took a group of men round Him and taught them.

I was forced to go to church from a young age, until i was old enough to realise that I wanted to chose my own way of life. At the age of 5 being told by nuns you will burn in hell. Scare tactics at the best.

Everyone knows right from wrong, do you need a church to tell you not to kill, steal or do bad things to people? If your a nice person your a nice person, no religion is going to stop someone from doing evil, going to church dosent make you a nice person. You are either good or bad. Some of the nastiest people I have met are christian, they have the nerve to preach peace and love to people!. I find that one of the most hypocrital ways of life you could ever choose.

You only have to read some messages from these so called peace lovers to see exactly what I mean.

Thats Christian! You might find that stuff in Christianity because its not proper worship, they don't even keep the sabbath day holy!
