We briefly had a 'van' which gave us height and space but it uses more fuel and is more difficult to manouver than a four by four. Some neighbours have bought a Prius hybrid fuel car for fashion reasons and we await their considered reaction. Meanwhile we've reverted to a Clio.

You can't go to a point to point except in a newish Bentley, any 4 by 4 or a beat up old Volvo.

I'm from America, the land of the 4X4. They are not safer. They operate at a huge risk to the safety of other drivers and to the environment. They do have some limited use for the folks who actually need them for farm work.
If you feel safer in one, you have been duped by misleading information.
Back home, it is usually assumed that the larger the truck, the smaller the...

Absolutely. If humans victimised people who were taller than them they would suffer the full wrath of anti-discrimination legislation.

Don't Fiat do a FIAT PAND 4x4, wouldn't have thought that to be a GAS GUSSLER - but there are plenty of other vehicles that gussle.

Put up the fuel and excise tax to prohibitive levels...........so only the filthy rich can afford to use them.

Quoted from this message

Yes,then if you see one on the road you can feel quite safe in the knowledge that the government is doing something to help the environment with the money it receives.

Or maybe not.

Still at least you won't feel angry that they are using a gas guzzler, knowing that they are paying through the nose for the privilege.

Or will you?

Of course by increasing the running costs of "large/heavy" vehicles you'll also increase the costs of transporting goods which will have a knock on effect on everybodies pockets.

Still with oil prices on the rise I'd love to see a forecourt webcam to see the faces when people fill up.. <wince>

I've a 4 litre 4x4 myself, only used for offroading but I can say that the fuel costs are a fraction of the total running costs.

I'd have thought a more pracical approach would be for government to legislate on my safety factors and thus 4x4's will simply evolve to look like all the rest of the motors. fuel efficent, safe etc.

Rather than going on about a vehicles ability to drive 4 wheels it seems to make more sense to make all 'vehicles' safer..

I'm invariably tailgated by these insecure drivers who need to prove the size of their bank balance to the world

Quoted from this message

Bank balances? Lets face it, if car credit wasn't so cheap and easily available as it is, 3/4 of these kid killers wouldn't even be on the roads. If there is one good side to the recent fuel prise rises, its that it may force more of these gas guzlers off our roads, as the cost of running them may become prohibitive. Roll on

My main complaint against the owners is that they can't park, in my street they either park with 2 wheels on the curb blocking the footpath or they park 2 foot from the curb blocking the road.I presume that they don't want to damage the wheel trims.

As for the Supermarket car park many of them haven’t got a clue, they appear to want to be within 10 yards of the store entrance although there is more space else where.
My neighbour works for my local supermarket and they have had numerous complaints that the parking bays are not big enough yet there is always loads of space they would just have “walk” a bit further.

Agree with you - they are not for town use. Country people need 4x4s.

I personally would run all 4x4 drivers off the road like they do to me most mornings. I am absolutely fed up with the school run mums pulling out in front of me and then looking shocked when they see me.

What need could they possibly have for a 4x4 in Reading! An urban city (sorry town!). I think 4x4 are more about trying to look good (read that as expensive! my hubby is an exec!).

They pollute our atmosphere and endanger our children, bann them, especially around school areas and inner city where they are not an essential piece of eye candy! (and before you ask I am a woman driver, who walks my children to school and drive a small car but only when absolutely necessary and this is by choice not necessity).
Am I the only one who loathes 4 x 4s - these gas-guzzling dangerous to pedestrians monsters on the road. The people driving them invariably can't park them properly - look in any supermarket/multi-storey car park. They are often driven by a lone blonde woman with mobile phone clamped permanently to the ear, and sunglasses on top of hair. The meaningless'child on board' notices which are always stuck on the rear window (merely obscure the drivers rear view) - why don't the brats walk to school?
On the motorway, I'm invariably tailgated by these insecure drivers who need to prove the size of their bank balance to the world - have thet no cares as to environment at all? Answers anticipated!

Clearly the people of Reading are overpaid and undertaxed if they can afford 4x4's for the school run.
