Not so long ago Durham Cathedral was voted the best building in Great Britain , rightly so in my opinion.
If any one in the North East or eleswhere has not visited this magnificent structure I suggest you do so you will not be disapointed.

The word awesome is overused these days but not in the case of this building.

No problem I think that this region's history is interesting and goes back a very long way but for some reason it tends to get overlooked.

I think that Durham Cathedral is just one of the buildings which deserves recognition, there are others in this region.

Approaching Durham railway station from the south is a truely wonderful experience. The cathedral is magnificent and a thousand years old (eat yer heart out USA!!) Considering the construction methods and the total non-understanding of materials and structural stresses I am amazed they even started building it.
Some years ago a large construction company used a computer to analyze the stresses formed by the central tower. They found that it didn't bear straight down but in a series of outwards stresses. The tower eventually 'rested' on the east and west ends and gradually increasingly back all the way to the tower.

Durham Cathedral, I seem to remember was once voted the most beautiful building in the WORLD. I'm not very travelled, but I wouldn't argue with that.

Durham Cathedral is one of oldest in Britain.

Although I live in Liverpool my dad is from Durham and Ive visited Durham many times, I have to admit its one of the best places in England and so are the people.

My dad comes from Stanley and so do my ancestors and including dad were coal miners at Oakies colliery.

Yes, I am sure Durham Cathedral is lovely. So is Lincoln; But years ago they were almost arm=wrestling people to the ground in lincoln to get their money. ( my God has a sense of humour.) Does yours? max nottingham of lincoln.

Best cathedral in the world / maybe but why turn everything into a list? Competition i9n one sense defeats cooperation. my god says work more with each other; not oppose each other as rivals. Doesn,t it start with a stupid rat-race egg and spoon race? i am sure the Daily Telegraph readers are going to lecture me with their ll-plus mentality on this. Let the debate start here. Cheers Max nottingham of lincoln. "King of the Phone-ins" But do call me Max.
