Pretentious, moi?

Plenty of hep cats and switched-on daddies have been raving about Tellier’s shagging outdoors, bliss-out of a track, La Ritournelle, this summer. Its dreamy minor chords and insistent drum breaks prompting cries of “Unfinished Sympathy for now”. For sure, it’s lush like a hot day, but elsewhere Seb’s warm vibes result in some limp lettuce, bursts of 30s Berlin oom-pah-pah, bad jazz, indulgent orchestrations and “interesting” quasi-revolutionary lyrics. Some people’s idea of nice entertainment for candle-lit nights in, then.

gotta disagree with the bristol review below, i was blown away by sebastien tellier's performance.

got to the brixton gig early after seeing the review in the independent - link here.

i agree with the independent opinion totally (thats a first). thought it was beautiful and absorbing, funny but moving too. i will definitely be buying CD - in fact just ordered on amazon.

Gotta agree with everything that has been said about Sebastian.....it was a laugh and to be honest I like seeing people push boundaries...don't really care what boundaries...as lomng as they're pushing lol.

Now, Royksopp.....what a fantastic gig...crowd were really up for it and it was just a shame that the sound in the Bristol Academy is so bloody awful......

Cheerio, mick

Something else I forgot to mention. He was smoking a cigarette by sticking it up his nose so he could smoke and sing at the same time.

I saw Sebastian last night at the Bristol Academy. It was quite possibly the funniest thing I have seen in a while. The guy was compltely off his head. He was acting like a drunk Oliver Reed jumping up on his chair the whole time and blaitently loving the sound of his own voice. His partner in music crime was a guy who i can only describe as looking like Perry from Kevin and Perry.

The music was absolutely dire. It was all long samey instrumental chords with him moaning over the top about something or other. It was either the quality of sound equipment in the Academy, which I doubt, he was completely unintelligable or drunk. I'm going for the latter. It took us three songs in to his set to actually realise he was singing, sorry droaning, in English.

The best bit of his set, which had us all in hysterics was when he bought the guitar out. He played a couple of chords at the beginning of the set and then went back to his droaning. Then at the end of the song he picked the guitar back up again and seemingly started playing chords, at least they may have been chords, at random the last few he decided it would be a great idea to pluck the strings using his teeth!?!

All in all for the amusement value he was great for a few songs. I don't think I'll be buying the CD!

Hi all, I've never heard of the guy and have just listened to the track 'la ritournelle' - gorgeous!

I am off to see Royksopp at the Bristol Academy in an hour or so and Sebastien Tellier is the support so i guess I'll know alot more by tonight....

If anyone is interested I'll let yoou know how it was.

Cheers, Mick

i would agree w/ that sentiment in general, but when an artist is too wildly eclectic and inconsistent w/ no strong thread or personality there's no motivation to become a fan of the artist instead of the individual songs. whereas someone like bjork has a strong style so that her entire range of music feels cohesive. to me at least.

Sounds good to me......why do people expect artist to do the same thing over and over......keep experimenting and don't be pulled into the evils of safe repetitious music.

I'm just listening to it now -- alas he's just stared singing but up to now it's been bliss. Now back on to the strings/riff stuff again -- wow. Great start to the playlist. Reminds me of KIng Crimson rather than BS Symphony.

i'm prob. one of many who really liked la ritournelle when i heard it on the bbc (giles' show i think). i was hoping the other tracks would be equally dreamy and hypnotic, but although the other two tracks aren't bad they're completely different and def. don't strike me at all. i've heard a track from his other album (which i think had no drums at all) which was more in the ritournelle vein, but don't know much more about it.
