Comparing music through "essential"reference point post 1
comment by peterbashford    Feb 21, 2005
Though reference points can be really helpful they can be mindnumbingly resstrictive.
As a painter I can get inspired by other peoples work, but it is then difficult not to use their "tricks" or be influenced by their style.
If you are looking for freedom and self expression dont go there. KT Tunstall let fly with Black Horse and the Cherry Tree, though there are obvious folk references the treatment is original and uncluttered by past history. Bjork is the current master and the futre will probably see a lot more people beside Sir John Tavernor seeing Bjork the serious composer/songwriter behind Bjork the image.
Another question is why are women currently creating much better music than men? Long may they continue to do so by the way!
