Kill or be killed.

Legendary musician Nick Cave has written a movie that, like his songs, is drenched in mood and atmosphere. His canvas is the Australian Outback in the 1880s, where nature still holds sway over man. A revisionist Western with hues of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In The West, director John Hillcoat pitches Charlie (Guy Pearce) as the high plains drifter. His “choice”? Kill or be killed, and his brutal brother (Danny Huston) is the target. Replete with shocking treatment towards Aborigines, The Proposition, like Nick Roeg’s Walkabout, haunts the memory long after the last bullet has been shot.

A beautiful film, but I wonder what Sam Peckinpah or Sergio Leone could have made of it?

I felt it was lacking the extra "something" which would have made it truly special; though it was beautifully shot, well acted and was overall, an above-average film.

I think it needed the macho-sensitivity of a Peckinpah film, the inner understanding of why they were Men like that in those times.

Ray Winstone deserves an honourable mention for bringing the humanity out of his character all the way through it.

The wardrobe was handmade to be as authentic as possible and even the buttons were all handmade for the film.

Memorable quote--What is an Irishman but a nigger turned inside out?

What's a misanthrope?
Arthur Burns: A misanthrope is a bugger who hates every other bugger.
Samuel Stote: Are we misanthropes?
Arthur Burns: Lord no! We're family.

I managed to catch this last week and thought it was one of the best films I've seen in ages. Gruesome and violent but beautifully shot and paced, it really did linger in the mind afterwards. Nick Cave's score (he wrote the film too) is haunting and wonderful, as you'd expect. And the acting's perfect.
