Tectonic funk

Jeffrey Logan is half of Themselves, with Doseone. His long-awaited solo disc has Odd Nosdam of cLOUDDEAD helping out at the controls. The approach is one of cumulative mood-spreading, their slow-hop beats booming with forceful bottom end. Samples are slapped on like mud, drying before the next quaking layer. There are few dynamic surprises here, and no serrated edges, but this disc's strength lies in its building mass of lumbering, decelerated funk, its textures gluey and thick.

Martin Longley 09 March 06 rating of 3 and 1/2
Jel Soft Money, released 13 March 06 on Anticon.
