![]() liars session
Secrets and lies. On the eve of their third album, Drums Not Dead, Brooklyn-to-Berlin band Liars are at the Curzon Soho. They’re here as Time Out’s My Favourite Film pundits, and to perform tracks from Drums Not Dead over their accompanying DVD.Their “favourite film” is Loose Change, a 9/11 documentary made by debut filmmakers Dylan Avery, Jason Bermas and Korey Rowe – the latter serving in Afghanistan and Iraq during 2002-3. It’s by no means perfect. KRS-One hollering about “party people” on the soundtrack over footage of the planes hitting the towers is disarmingly inappropriate. But its intelligent, point-by-point dissection makes a dry counterpoint to the dual dominance of the Fox Networks’ near-hysterical patriotism and Michael Moore’s hugely successful polemicism. To wit: How could jet fuel vaporise six-tonne titanium engines? How can you make a cell phone call from 32,000 ft? Says Liars’ Angus, “It’s not that we all three unanimously agree with the views expressed in it. But if you believe just one of the points it’s interesting.” ![]() Liars perform in front of their DVD, in conversation It’s about debate, differing views rather than any one version that solidifies into received wisdom, before lamination and insertion into the folder marked “history”. Says Aaron: “[The film] is direct. They made it, distributed it on the internet. It’s about access. It’s an abstract comparison, but it’s like how home recording saved music.” Liars’ third album, Drums Not Dead, recorded in Berlin, loosely revolves around the opposition between the brave, impulsive Drum and the doubting, nervous Mt Heart Attack. Its titles are, as ever, long and literate. (Aaron: “They’re like our chapter headings.”). Gnarled and tribal, it wends its way through voodoo drums and unsettling guitar clangs before building to the transcendent release of The Other Side Of Mt Heart Attack. But hey – what do we know? Listen to the tracks, watch the footage… and make up your own mind.

You have never even told a half truth?Of course one shouldnt lie! but truth should be treated with caution. If you dont want to tell the truth, dont lie, just dont tell.

Liars currently sound like the ghosts of Animal Collective if they'd all been gunned down and come back evil.
