The Magician [Ingmar Bergman, 1958]
by: Mike  Thursday 20 February 2003
This film has elements of philosophy, farce and pastiche horror. Although there are times when the film struggles to maintain coherence, Bergman manages to pull off this strange mixture of
styles with some success, and in a pretty accessible way.

Max von Sydow plays the enigmatic Albert Emanuel Vogler, the magician who is part of the travelling Magnetic Health Theater. They boast supernatural abilities, and are forced to prove their so-called powers before the highly sceptical dignitaries of a small town.

The clash of scientific rationalism and belief in the supernatural provides a vehicle for a typically intense - but also at times quite humorous - Bergman study of charlatanism. Sydow gives a superb central performance.

Quite a strange film, but well worth seeing.
