Broadcast quality After several years in which he was missing, presumed dead, few expected Dan Treacy, who essentially is The Television Personalities, to make a comeback. Yet his unpredictable temperament has turned up the most unlikely instalment so far: a good new album. My Dark Places captures the offbeat brilliance that made the TVPs indie legends in the 70s, characterised by Treacy’s endearingly slapdash attitude towards singing in tune and playing in time. In the wonky, woozy Dream The Sweetest Dreams, though, or the upbeat They’ll Have To Catch Us First, there is enough self-effacing charm to make this a rare success in a career of opportunities missed. The Television Personalities - My Dark Places, released 27 February 06 on Domino.
