The second album from the acclaimed singer/songwriter. It’s been two and a half years since Tom McRae’s self-titled, Mercury nominated debut. He returns with Just Like Blood, a collection of songs which certainly justify the wait. “For me, a song’s got to succeed in a way no other art form can,” he reckons. “It has to hit that transcendent moment. That’s what music is all about, getting that moment where you don’t know why you’re laughing, crying or dancing, but it’s nailed you and no one knows how, what or why.” Just Like Blood is an album that will make you do all of these things and more if you let it. It’s produced by Ben Hillier, responsible for Elbow’s Asleep In The Back, with which Tom’s album shares a similar melancholy but uplifting atmosphere. Ultimately, though, it’s the strength of songwriting that underpins the album, one which will probably push Tom blinking into the limelight. Let’s hope he copes.
