cinema - love liza

Love Liza
Philip Seymour Hoffman (Boogie Nights, Happiness) finally gets to carry a film of his own. And he’s remarkable as the recently bereaved husband in this tragicomic tale. The depth he gives his character is particularly impressive, given that he spends most of the film unconscious from sniffing gasoline. His other coping mechanism is only slightly healthier – he becomes obsessed with remote control model airplanes. At times, the film seems as confused and alienating as Hoffman’s character, but the central performance keeps you hooked. Heartbreaking stuff. Wendy Ide 30 January 03
