Divine Intervention
An anxious-looking Santa Claus pounds up a hillside of desert scrub. He’s pursued by a bunch of determined Arab pre-teens with trouble in mind. It’s a surreal opening sequence to a film which just gets weirder. Whimsical, playful and at times willfully obtuse, this is also an angry, eloquent exploration of what it is to be Palestinian right now. While director Elia Suleiman clearly has no great affection for Israeli armed forces (his soldiers are thuggish caricatures), his strength is the honesty (and oddity) of his mosaic of small-scale human stories.
