Strangely comfortable. She was folkin’ while the majority of UK music makers were still obsessed with drum machines, and Beth Orton’s scuffed, techno-folkie appeal bagged her slots singing for the Chemical Brothers. At her best you can hear echoes of the great Sandy Denny, as on the fine Feral Children, but the overall meditative niceness that prevails here is just plain so-so. Beth’s phrasing, too, starts to pale when paired with underwhelming melodies and Jim O’Rourke’s spartan production. You want to like it, and Comfort Of Strangers is summer evening stuff for sure, but this LP doesn’t really take you anywhere but the backyard. Beth Orton – Comfort Of Strangers, released 13 February 06 on EMI.
