Imperfect stories at the Baltic, Gateshead. Surprisingly, Along The Way is the first UK solo show of work by the influential American artist Kerry James Marshall. It includes collage, painting, drawing and sculpture from the 70s to 2005, all of which combine portraits with politics centring around the history of African-Americans within society and art. Marshall’s portraits of boy scouts have a look of early propaganda posters, employing simple colours with roughly designed backgrounds. His larger collage-like paintings dating from 80s are similar in style, but the figures are surrounded by references, from police lines to portraits of Martin Luther King. Despite their bright colours, the overall feeling is slightly sinister and physically intense. By contrast, Marshall’s recent Vignette series is painted in shades of grey depicting romantic scenes of lovers in idyllic surroundings. While their soft edges recall picture-book illustrations, the finished paintings feel as if Marshall never really wanted the viewer to believe in the perfect stories they tell. Kerry James Marshall – Along The Way is at the Baltic, Gateshead, until 23 April 06.
