More bounce to the ounce. Alongside Madlib, J Dilla is rapidly becoming a hip-hop producer on the cusp of creating something astounding. Donuts is a notepad of instrumental ideas, bending unexpected genre forms around crudely cut samples and jarring soul chirrups. Bursting with unrefined bounce, this record hints at the carefree experimentation that sample-based music keeps stalling on. Dilla just lets it all hang loose, and his scrappy technique pulls out enough fuel to sail an entire career on. He should be applauded, because he’s just made the first essential hip-hop album of the year. J Dilla – Donuts, released 13 February O6 on Stones Throw.

Yup, I know it's sample based... what I'm saying is that sample based music often doesn't reach the parts that Donuts does. Hope that clears up the misunderstading.

Jay Dee's music WAS sample-based - this whole album was constructed of samples in fact. He made most of it from his hospital bed, too. RIP Jay Dee.
