dvds of the year 2002

Are you sitting comfortably? It’s Collective’s pick of the year’s DVDs.

Battle Royale
School children kill each other on an island in this Japanese Grange Hill with guns, grenades and vicious saucepan wielding. Morally questionable but still essential viewing. Extras: biographies, stills, film notes by Collective’s own Mark Wyatt. The Special Edition includes a whole extra disc of goodies.

Dekalog 6-10 (Two discs)
Krzysztof Kieslowski never made a bad film in his life. Here are five hour-long masterpieces, very loosely based on the Ten Commandments, to prove it. Episodes 6-10 include A Short Film About Love while 1-5 (also available) feature A Short Film About Killing. The choice is yours. Extras: interview with the director.

Don’t Look Now
Top British horror yarn famous for its sex scene, directed by Nicolas Roeg. Stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie in gloomy Venice as they come to terms with their daughter’s death. But who’s that in the red coat? Very scary. Extras: documentary, trailer, DVD-ROM features.
more

The Evil Dead (Uncut)
The full, uncut version of Sam Raimi’s textbook zombie film, finally available in the UK. Five kids are lost in the woods. They find a book of spells and they read them out. Doh! Get ready to watch them die. Extras: including director/star commentaries and trailer.
more

Ghost World
Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel reaches the screen, with porky sulk monster Thora Birch and nerd king Steve Buscemi hitting it off in the American suburbs. Funnier, sadder and darker than American Beauty. Extras: featurettes on Daniel Clowes, gallery, trailer.

The Man Who Wasn’t There
The Coen Brothers in downbeat mood with Billy Bob Thornton as a loser barber who meets a con man, takes a shine to a young pianist and murders someone. All in black and white. Extras: including director/star commentaries, documentary, deleted scenes, trailer.

Mulholland Drive
David Lynch’s gripping, if confusing yarn about a woman who stumbles away from a car accident unable to remember anything about who she is. Typically dark and noir in style, this is one you’ll want to (and have to) revisit. Extras: interviews, biographies, trailer.
more

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (Special Edition)
Oscar-winning Jack Nicholson finds himself in a lunatic asylum and rages against the system. His angry young man is supported by a fine ensemble cast. Full of wit and pathos. Extras: two-disc set featuring director’s commentary, documentary, deleted scenes and trailer.
more

The Royal Tenenbaums
Extremely funny portrait of a dysfunctional family of overachievers. Patriarch Gene Hackman returns to the fold and causes no end of trouble. The fantastic cast includes a chain-smoking Gwyneth Paltrow. Extras: two-disc set featuring director’s commentary, documentary, cast interviews and deleted scenes.
more

Y Tu Mama Tambien
Astonishing Mexican road-movie, throwing together a 28-year-old woman and two teenage boys, from the director of the fourth Harry Potter movie (out 2004), believe it or not. Find of the year. Extras: including director’s commentary, documentary, deleted scenes and short film by director.

best of the rest…
Memento
Monster’s Ball
Moulin Rouge
The Officer’s Ward
The Wicker Man
